Anti-virus Policy Update Damages Office Connector and Liberty Reports .xla File

Background

When using Sage Office Connector or Liberty Reports with certain anti-virus applications, a recent security policy update marks the Office Connector.xla or LR.xla file as dangerous and attempts to quarantine/disinfect/remove the file.

Problem

Office Connector.xla and LR.xla provide the main functionality for Office Connector and Liberty Reports. Once either of these files becomes damaged or removed due to the anti-virus security policy update, Office Connector or Liberty Reports will cease to operate.

Office Connector Symptoms:

  • Office Connector toolbar is grayed out in Excel and the steps referenced in this Knowledge Base Article do not resolve the issue.
  • Office Connector toolbar appears normal but trying to utilize any part of it results in an error message stating that the xla file is missing or macros have been disabled.
  • Trying to manually add xla file results in Excel crashing.
  • Trying to re-install Office Connector errors out when attempting to load xla file.

Liberty Reports Symptoms:

  • Liberty Reports toolbar appears normal but trying to utilize any part of it results in an error message stating that the xla file is missing or macros have been disabled.
  • Trying to manually add xla file results in Excel crashing.
  • Trying to re-install Liberty Reports errors out when attempting to load xla file.
  • Using Liberty Reports to access Sage 100 Contractor information results in error message stating the username and/or password does not exist or may not have proper security permissions.

    • PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU ARE USING SYMANTEC END POINT, THE BELOW RECOMMENDATION WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU UPDATE SYMANTEC END POINT TO THE MOST CURRENT VERSION BEFORE FOLLOWING THE STEPS LISTED BELOW.

Recommendation

In order to restore functionality for Office Connector or Liberty Reports:

  1. Temporarily disable all anti-virus running on the workstation.
    • EVENT 1 SOFTWARE IN NO WAY RECOMMENDS PERMANENTLY REMOVING THE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM FROM ANY WORKSTATION ENVIRONMENT.
  2. Add an exception to the anti virus policy for the following paths to prevent the xla file from being damaged again.
  3. Uninstall all Event 1 or Office Connector programs via Windows Control Panel\Programs And Features.
  4. Delete the following folder from the workstation.
    • C:\Event1\
    • C:\Program Files(x86)\Event 1\
  5. Re-install Office Connector or Liberty Reports.
  6. Enable anti-virus on the workstation.
