There was a problem sending the command to the program

Symptom

When you double-click a Microsoft Excel workbook or template (via Windows Explorer, your Windows desktop, Office Connector Launch Pad, or Liberty Reports Desktop), you receive one of the following messages:

Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008
There was a problem sending the command to the program.

Windows Vista
Windows cannot find 'FilePathFileName'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

Background

When you double-click an Excel file, a message is sent to Excel using a methodology called Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). This message tells Excel to open the file that you double-clicked. There is a setting in Excel that tells Excel to ignore DDE messages sent to it by other programs (including Windows Explorer).

Solution

The solution is to uncheck the Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) box in the Excel options window.
